BENGALURU: Paytm is expected to launch a chat messenger in its app to allow its user, according to sources familiar with the development. The company will convert its payment users to messaging and help businesses connect with consumers.
Paytm's messaging service will let users send audio, video, pictures and texts,said the source, who declined to be named.
Apart from buying flight tickets, book movie shows and paying utilities, users will soon be able to chat with each other using this service, one of the people said on condition of anonymity. The development was first reported by Wall Street Journal.
Paytm did not respond to an email seeking comment.
Paytm currently has more than 225 million users.
E-payments in India surged after the country banned old high-value currency notes late last year. Firms like Paytm have since rapidly increased their market share. Digital payments in India would jump nearly 10 times to $500 billion by 2020, according to a 2016 report by Boston Consulting Group.
WhatsApp itself has been looking at moving into digital payment services in India. The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday was first to report Paytm's plan to launch a messaging service.
